Medium Chain Triglycerides, commonly known as MCT, is naturally found in foods like palm oil and coconut oil. In terms of sourcing, MCT is mainly produced from coconut oil and palm kernel oil through a series of processes such as hydrolysis, separation, and esterification.
MCT has an extremely wide range of applications. In the food industry, it can be rapidly metabolized in the human body to provide energy, making it suitable for functional sports drinks, energy bars, and other foods, which can quickly replenish energy after consumption. In the pharmaceutical field, MCT acts as a drug carrier to improve drug solubility and stability, and also serves as a lubricant and moisturizer in the production of ointments, suppositories and other preparations. In cosmetics, MCT is often used in facial cleansers, creams, lotions and other products to make the skin smooth and radiant.
Metabolic Revolution: A "Fast Track" for Fats
The journey of traditional fats in the body is long and tortuous. They need to be emulsified by bile, hydrolyzed by pancreatic enzymes, re-esterified into chylomicrons, enter the bloodstream through the lymphatic system and some are stored as fat finally. However, MCT has opened up a "fast track" for metabolism. It does not require hydrolysis by pancreatic lipase, nor does it rely on the lymphatic system for absorption. Instead, it can be directly absorbed by the intestines into the bloodstream, quickly taken up by the liver, and rapidly metabolized into ketones to provide energy for the body. It means MCT can be quickly utilized by the body and is less likely to be stored as fat.
MCT also regulates the activity of fatty acid synthase, making it harder for the body to produce new fat. Additionally, it modulates ghrelin and exerts a specific effect on GPR84 in adipose tissue, increasing satiety and helping to reduce food intake. When you reduce food intake, you also reduce calorie intake, which is beneficial for weight control.
Scientific Weight Loss: Efficacy Proven by Trials
In 2023, a randomized controlled clinical trial targeting obese women recruited 263 participants and conducted a 45-day experiment. In the trial, Test Group A followed a low-calorie ketogenic diet while supplementing with an additional 20 grams of MCT daily.Meanwhile, Test Group B also followed a low-calorie ketogenic diet with 20 grams of daily MCT supplementation but started 5 days earlier than Test Group A. The results showed that the two MCT-supplemented groups lost significantly more weight with greater reductions in BMI and waist circumference. In particular, Test Group B, which started MCT supplementation 5 days earlier, lost twice as much fat as the control group and also showed a significant increase in muscle mass.
In 2015, there were two meta-analyses on "the effects of MCT on body composition". One of the results showed that subjects who replaced dietary long-chain fatty acids with MCT experienced significant weight loss. The other result indicated that replacing LCT with MCT in the diet may lead to a moderate reduction in body weight and composition. Both of these meta-analyses demonstrated that either additionally supplementing MCT in the diet or replacing a portion of daily cooking oil (long-chain fatty acids) with MCT can result in greater weight loss and is more beneficial for weight management.
