How to choose the right lubricant additive for WPC?
What is WPC?
Wood–plastic composites (WPC) are composite materials made from wood fibers and thermoplastic polymers, such as polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
In addition to wood fibers and plastics, WPC may also contain other lignocellulosic materials or other inorganic fillers. WPC is a subset of a broader class of materials known as natural fiber–plastic composites (NFPC). Cellulose-based fillers, such as pulp fibers, peanut shells, coffee husks, bamboo, and rice straw, are not permitted.
It is manufactured in the form of boards or beams and can be used in a wide range of applications, such as outdoor deck flooring, railings, park benches, car door panels, automotive seat backs, fences, window and door frames, timber‑frame construction, and interior furniture. Moreover, it demonstrates promising potential as an insulating and sound‑proofing panel.
What is the function of lubricant additives in WPC?
Composite structures also require certain chemical additives. These additives bind the polymer and wood flour (powder) together and help optimize processing conditions.
For example, WPC requires proper lubrication to ensure optimal performance and service life. Appropriate lubricant additives can help protect WPC from wear, reduce friction, and enhance its overall performance.
How to choose the right lubricant additive for WPC?
When selecting lubricant additives for WPC, it is important to consider the type of application and the operating environment of the WPC. For example, if the WPC will be exposed to high temperatures or humid conditions, a lubricant with a higher viscosity index may be required. Additionally, if the WPC is intended for applications that demand frequent lubrication, a lubricant with an extended service life may be necessary.
WPC can utilize standard lubricants for polyolefins and PVC, such as glycerol monostearate (GMS99), ethylene bisstearamide (EBS), stearic acid, zinc stearate, paraffin wax, and oxidized PE, among others.
We always recommend using a combination lubricant: glyceryl monostearate GMS99, stearic acid, and paraffin wax for WPC.
